Subject

Hugh Hodgson Impact and Legacy

Description

The items include a plaque to honor Hugh Hodgson and a newspaper article informing the readers of a recital being held to honor Hodgson. The recital and plaque help exemplify the strong impact Hodgson left on the University of Georgia's music program as they honor him and his amazing legacy. The plaque was dedicated in 2005 at the School of Music to commemorate the contributions and services Hodgson provided to the School of Music (Adams, 2019). While the article has no date, it can be assumed the recital is somewhere after 1969, as this is the year Hugh Hodgson passed away, and the article refers to him as the "late Hugh Hodgson" (Recital to Honor Hugh Hodgson, Hodgson Papers). Frances Hodgson and Robert Edge led the recital based on the article as well. Frances Hodgson studied piano with Hugh Hodgson, and Robert Edge was a talented pianist who was the chairman of the University of Georgia Foundation (Recital to Honor Hugh Hodgson, Hodgson Papers). The article explains that Hodgson was the music department head at the University of Georgia and tells of some of his works that greatly impacted the music department and School of Music at the university (Recital to Honor Hugh Hodgson, Hodgson Papers). As mentioned in the article, many often remember Hugh Hodgson by his "Music Appreciation" nights (Recital to Honor Hugh Hodgson, Hodgson Papers). Through these sessions, Hodgson helped students learn and experience music. Because of these Music Appreciation nights and other activities Hodgson partook in like “high school musical festivals,” it is clear that Hodgson musical passion went beyond his classroom (McDade, 109). Although Hodgson was originally the "the only music faculty member" and taught "sight singing and dictation, history of music, appreciation of music, and harmony," he still "conducted the Men's Glee Club from 1928 until 1942" and "the University Little Symphony from 1941 until 1950" (McDade, 72, 108). Hodgson’s contributions’ significances surpass his lifetime and "guided [the School of Music] to eventual membership in the National Association of Schools of Music," setting a wonderful foundation for the University of Georgia’s School of Music (McDade, 107).
