Film as Composition

“Changeover into the Zone,” from Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, 1979.

Using Andrei Tarkovsky’s writing, Sculpting in Time, and his films, Solaris and Stalker, as well as other films, I implement such media in classes in order to hold discussions about elements of narrative design and the function of film as an expressive medium, in both form and content. It serves as an extraordinarily valuable tool in teaching close reading and analysis. In previous classes, students have composed short films given narrative and audio constraints and suggestions. In a Summer Online course students created mini films to document archival research in Georgia Tech’s Science Fiction Collection.
