Subject
The First Volume of the Western Pokémon Manga (1997)
Description
The world of Pokémon was created by Satoshi Tajiri for Nintendo, and started as video games on the Nintendo Game Boy system. Since then, the characters have been adapted to merchandise such as collectible trading cards, action figures, anime television shows and more famously, manga. Manga can be defined as “Japanese comic books and graphic novels considered collectively as a genre. Characteristically speaking, the characters' faces typically have large-eyes, and extremely jolly expressions that represent contentment.
Manga became very popular soon after the promotion of the anime. A manga series based on the anime named The Electric Tale of Pikachu was written by Toshihiro Ono. The first volume of the series was first published on October 28, 1997. The most famous manga in the western world, however (and the item in focus), is Pokémon Adventures, with the first volume being published in Japan on August 8, 1997. It was one of the most successful Pokémon manga, with 150,000 copies sold worldwide. It is also the longest running manga in Pokémon history based on its starting date.
The first Pokémon Adventures novel features Red, the protagonist who learns about Pokémon and receives his first Pokedex from his mentor, Professor Oak. Red later meets his rivals named Blue and Green. Down the line, they face an encounter that forces them to come together and put their differences aside. Afterwards, Red and Green squash their differences. However, the truce is short lived between Red and Blue, and they perform a duel. Red wins and claims the title of Pokémon Champion.
