Beginning in 1955, The United States and the former country known as the United Soviet Socialist Republic were competing in what was known in history as the Space Race. The goal of the competition was to determine who would begin space exploration and put technology into space first. It essentially ended when US astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on the moon in 1969.

That same year that the same race began, American politician Richard B. Russel travelled to the USSR. Written in a Top-Secret U.S document titled “Unidentified Flying Objects”, it is stated that Russel and 2 other spectators were “firmly convinced that they saw a genuine flying saucer or flying disc” (Carpenter 1). All three people that witnessed the object said that they were “circular” and “zoomed off at very high speed”. To make suspicions worse, when the observers spotted the flying object, nearby Soviet trainmen quickly closed the window curtains, forbidding them from looking.

While the USSR no longer exists, Russia—a country that took up the majority of USSR land—has experienced strange, alien related activity. In the past couple of years alone, Russia has experienced many suspicious events that has conspiracy theorists questioning the country. In December 2018, eyewitnesses reported a mysterious black ring that hung from the sky, “like a UFO” (Daily Mirror 2018). That same year in eastern Russia, a landslide resulted in a large mound that dammed a 390 mile long river. The mound, according to Daily Mirror is approximately 525 feet high. Many people in this area believe it to either have been caused by a meteorite from space, or the result of a UFO crash. Many of the strange happenings of Russia that people think are alien related are still unsolved.
