The old and new McWhorter Halls were named after the University of Georgia’s first All-American in football, Robert L. McWhorter. Robert McWhorter played football and baseball for UGA from 1910-1913, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. From the years 1923-1958, Robert McWhorter was a professor at the university after attending law school at the University of Virginia. He became the mayor of Athens, Georgia in the year 1940 and served for 7 years. Robert McWhorter played an active role in Athens, Georgia from the time he was an undergraduate student until the end of his life in 1960. The University of Georgia named of the old McWhorter dormitory to Robert McWhorter’s legacy in the year 1966. The dorm would be used to house and feed male athletes during this time period, however, this dormitory did not stay occupied on UGA’s campus for long. The old dormitory had a case of rape occur in 2002. The building was shut down following the case and some other incidents. The original plan of the building involved turning the old dorm into a space dedicated to education and learning, such as the Science Learning Center. Unfortunately, the building was torn down and turned into a parking lot instead. The closing of this dorm would force students to move to the East Campus Village in the years following. In 2004, the university opened the East Campus Village, where a new co-ed dormitory would be opened and named the Robert L. McWhorter building.
