Central State Hospital

Central State Hospital was first founded as the Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum of the state of Georgia in the year 1842.

Over the next several decades, the hospital changed names and superintendents several times eventually growing to become one of the largest hospitals of its kind with a total of two hundred buildings scattered across nearly two thousand acres. At the mid-century mark, the hospital housed 10,003 patients and reached upwards of 12,000 at its prime. With a history dating back almost ninety years before any form of regulations were put into place, years of electroshock therapy, suicide, murder, and fraudulent activities have left the hospital and even the city surrounding it with an infamous legacy.
