The god of Pokémon, Arceus

Believe it or not, in the Pokémon universe, there is a god of Pokémon. First introduced during the fourth installment of Pokémon; Pokémon Platinum and Pearl, Arceus the “Alpha Pokémon” or “The Original One” is considered to be the mastermind behind the creation of the Sinnoh region and perhaps all of the Pokémon universe. In Pokémon Diamond, a legend states that Arceus created the universe using its 1,000 arms, and in Pokémon Pearl, it is told in mythology that Arceus was born before the universe even existed.

Arceus’s design is reminiscent of the mythological Qilin and Centaur. Its white body is separated by golden protrusions at its waist. However, there is an alternate base form for Arceus; when caught as a shiny version of the Pokémon, its white coloring is changed to gold. Arceus stands over ten feet tall and weighs over seven hundred pounds.

Although Arceus doesn’t evolve like the majority of other Pokémon, it can change its color and type by giving it a plate or z-crystal, making it the only Pokémon with the ability to become any type outside of combat. When Arceus isn’t holding a plate or z-crystal, it is a normal type Pokémon.

Coming in January of 2022, Arceus will get its own video game called; “Pokémon Legends: Arceus.” Where the story will primarily feature Arceus as well as a historical look at the world of Pokémon before the rush of modern technology.

Fun Fact: Since the release of Arceus in 2009, the pronunciation of its name has been debated and changed over the course of its lifetime. Originally pronounced with a soft ‘c’ (Ar-See-Us) the pronunciation was changed for international audiences for sake of clarity to a hard ‘c’ (Ar-Kee-Us).
