Title
Pokémon Cosplay: Pikachu Kigurumi
Subject
Kigurumi, Pikachu
Description
Like most anime, manga, and video game fandoms, cosplay is common within the Pokémon fandom. Most fans will dress up as human characters from the games and anime such as Ash, Team Rocket, Misty, May, or Dawn, Officer Jenny, or Nurse Joy. While it is common for fans to cosplay as human characters from the anime, it is far from unheard of for fans to dress up in costumes of their favorite Pokémon species, especially if it is in the kigurumi or gijinka style of cosplay.
Kigurumi is basically a hooded coverall pajama jumpsuit disguised as a character like Pikachu, while a gijinka (also called "moe anthropomorphism") is a human form of a species. Because of the popularity of Pikachu as the mascot of the Pokémon franchise, many young women dress in a kigurumi style of cosplay for pikachu. Cosplay is often displayed at Comic Book Conventions, or Television conventions such as ComicCon or DragonCon.
While avid Pokemon Cosplayers may choose other pokemon to embody, Pikachu’s significance stems from his role as the protagonist pokemon in the Pokemon World. Pikachu serves Ash Ketchum (Satoshi), as his main/ starting pokemon who makes an appearance in nearly every episode. Pikachu cosplay has many variants of clothing but this particular item is based on Pikachu’s base appearance, which is a yellow-mouse like creature with a lightning heart tail.
