Description

The Alma Metro Station located in Belgium was a Metro Station that was introduced in order to divert the Metro through the campus of the University of Louvain with the constraint requiring that not only the Metro Station be included in the concept but the buildings surrounding it were to be an extension of the design. The design is a natural representation of the previous landscape. Some choice decisions were to include centuries-old “desire paths” intact, design and placement of structural pillars would represent a forest of trees with spontaneous placement rather than intentional and ordered. Glass and structural materials were composed of many different designs in order to avoid repetition. Surfaces were meant to blend into each other and make the user aware of their natural connection to the materials and their surroundings. Perspective was a large focus of Lucien Kroll. Objects that were close to the viewer such as glass, fencing, and housing for illumination tubes were hand-molded and painted to show the close attention to detail all objects in nature are given naturally. Hand-painted objects were painted in freehand rather than using stencils to ensure that every surface was different rather than a reflection of another. The molding of the housing for the illumination tubes and the covering of the columns were cast in aluminum and imprinted in the narrow margin during the setting phase of the mold. The space is a representation of modern collaboration and achievement in advancements from primitive origins to the quick and constant motion that is human progression, one of the achievements being a rapid transport system.
