Mr. Hugh Hodgson had a passion and love for music that is shown through his efforts in UGA's music program, along with his dedication to teaching music across the state. Hugh was born in Athens, GA and was a student and "professor of music and chair of the newly established Department of Music" at UGA ("Hodgson History and Bio"). Hugh Hodgson School of Music is dedicated to the impact Hugh made at the University of Georgia. Musically talented and dedicated are understatements for Hugh; he played for and taught music to various age groups, and he was also a talented teacher who "seldom los[t] his temper even at the type of playing that might make other musicians lose their wits" (Cohn 27). He drove to Atlanta every weekend as organist and choir director of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where he "[gave] up his Sunday mornings for his art" (Cohn 27). Hugh never seemed to want to take a break from music, it was much more than a job to him. His home encompasses his musical spirit, "filled with countless gadgets and knick nacks with which he plays untiringly" (Cohn 26). Hugh specialized as a pianist and a composer, but he also: played clarinet in school, taught music theory and music history, and taught music appreciation ("Hodgson History and Bio"). Hugh was the first music professor at UGA and helped establish a music department at what is now Georgia State University. Along with Hugh's major contributions to music appreciation across Georgia, he went on to "conduct master classes at colleges and universities in 18 states under the auspices of the Association of American Colleges" ("Hodgson History and Bio"). Overall, Hugh Hodgson's impact for music appreciation is significant to UGA and several other universities, colleges, and churches.
