Music Appreciation Hour Program

This item is an advertisement for a specific Music Appreciation hour held on the first of March in 1945 (Music Appreciation Hour Program, Hodgson Papers). The hour started at eight and was being presented by IOTA ZETA Chapter of SAI (Music Appreciation Hour Program, Hodgson Papers). Hugh Hodgson's compositions were listed as the focus of the night, but the night included other composers’ works such as “Ballet of the Blessed Spirits” from Christopher Willibald Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice (Music Appreciation Hour Program, Hodgson Papers). Hymns were also included in the night’s program like “O Perfect Love,” and Trio in G was performed in andante religioso, meaning in religious manner (Music Appreciation Hour Program, Hodgson Papers). Musical talents including voice, piano, and a string quartet were part of the night’s performance (Music Appreciation Hour Program, Hodgson Papers). As always, Hodgson’s Music Appreciation hours were held in the Chapel for the “thirty-two years he presented” them (McDade, 109). These Music Appreciation hours allowed students the opportunity to gain more music knowledge and musical exposure as Hodgson often invited famous musical figures such as Robert Frost, “a regular visitor” (Hodgson History, 1). Through these sessions Hodgson also "explained [compositions] with regard to form, style, and information concerning the composer,” introducing students to critical analysis of music as they “discussed...salient features of the music” (McDade, 66, 109). These Music Appreciation hours were also “lecture-recital programs,” which allowed Hodgson to not only teach, but influence "the cultural lives of countless students" (McDade, 109). Hodgson was "'popular with all the students" and believed "students should have a liberal arts education'" (McDade, 110). This belief highlights Hodgson’s passion for musical education and explains the strong impact and legacy his Music Appreciation hours left on students.
